About surface hoar

Why surface hoar?  Or should I say what is surface hoar?  Well to answer that you need to know a little bit more about our family sailing history.  My Dad has owned 3 boats named avalance.  His reasoning is that his boats are always white, and everything in our family happens all at one.  Fair enough.  Well we all also ski, and I went to school in Montana and got very into back country skiing.  In doing so I studied snow types in avalanche safety courses.  Well it turns out a snow type that leads to avalanches is called surface hoar, or hoar frost.  It’s those really long crystals you see on the surface of the snow when it gets really cold out at night.  In keeping with the snow theme for a boat name, and because everyone assumes it means something else, I’ve stuck with it.

You can read more about it here.
